This was the start of our 2002 holiday to a cottage in Northumberland in mid-November. Why, you might ask? Well, a combination of business uncertainties and concerns over Thelma had delayed any plans we might have had for a holiday earlier in the year. When we finally felt that we could take a break, it was the start of November and we were thinking of somewhere in the Med or further south that would still be warm. However, we then discovered that Kathie's passport was due to expire so plan B was to find a nice quiet out-of-season cottage (with a log fire) where we could just relax and get away from it all. And so it was that we found just such a place in the Allendale valley (nr Sparty Lea) via Dales Cottages on the internet It's very much sheep country (and the local produce tastes delicious - the butcher even lists which farms it comes from) and suitably picturesque. The Butcher is next to the Co-op in Allendale Town
